IV Sedation

IV (intravenous) sedation is fast-acting and allows even the most apprehensive patients to take one step closer in their journey to a full and healthy smile. This incredible sedation method is known for being extremely effective in helping nervous patients to relax in the dentist’s chair.

Overview

The effects of sedation are almost instantaneous: as soon as the sedative is administered, using a small needle on the back of your hand will induce feelings of deep relaxation, wellbeing and comfort. Whilst under IV sedation, you will be fully awake and have full capacity to open and close your mouth and speak with your dentist as they perform your surgery.

Working alongside your implant surgeon will be a second experienced clinician who will monitor your response to the sedative closely. Your vitals, blood pressure and reactions will be very closely observed throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I feel after IV sedation?

The effects of sedation will begin to subside after about 30 minutes of you having your procedure. You should feel completely normal again after 24 hours. One of the (many!) fantastic things about sedation is there is generally no ‘hangover’ sensation, something that is closely associated with going under general anaesthetic.

Whilst you are awake for the duration of the time you are sedated, it’s completely normal to forget some of your procedures. This is due to the amnesic effects of the sedative.

Who is best suited to IV sedation?

Patients with a history of dental phobia make excellent candidates for IV sedation. In fact, sedation can work wonders on how a person perceives the dentist in the future. It’s not uncommon for patients to admit they no longer need the help of sedation to undergo a procedure after having it just once.

As dentists, we find that the vast majority of individuals with dental phobia suffer due to an adverse experience with the dentist in the past. In many cases, merely showing someone with a dental phobia that they’re in caring and considerate hands is sufficient to help them foster new, positive feelings towards the dentist. However, if you need an extra helping hand to relax, sedation is available to you at Denmark Street.

How long will I be under?

Implant surgery can take between 1 and 2 hours. You will feel the effects of sedation for the duration of your procedure.

Will I be under anaesthetic?

Yes. We will administer a local anaesthetic at the site where your surgeon will place your implant or implants. This is administered once the sedative takes effect.

Can I drive home after IV sedation?

As you will still feel a little drowsy once the effects start to wear off, you will need to ask someone to drive you home after your implant surgery. We will request that you agree to this as part of the consent and treatment forms we ask you to complete prior to your surgery.

How long does it take for the effects to wear off?

The rate at which the sedative wears off will differ slightly from person to person. However, most people normally recover within 30 to 60 minutes and may feel a little drowsy for several hours afterwards.

Is there a professional sedation dentist at Denmark Street Dental?

As a dominating implant clinic in the Northeast, sedation is one of the most important services we offer our patients, as oral surgery is something we do every day. You will be in the capable hands of a professional sedation dentist who will work alongside your oral surgeon. Their role is to monitor you at all times, making sure your vitals, blood pressure and response to the sedative are all completely as they should be.

Do you offer finance for dental treatment?

Yes, we offer interest-free and interest-bearing finance so that high-quality dental care is accessible to all our patients.
