What are loose teeth?

Loose teeth are teeth that lack structural support and which have detached from the bone and the gum. Other symptoms that can commonly accompany loose teeth include bleeding and swollen gums, as well as gum recession (where the gums withdraw from teeth).

What causes loose teeth?

Some common causes of loose teeth include:

Gum disease

This is actually the leading cause of tooth loss among adults in the U.K. The build-up of plaque can plague the gum line and eventually cause teeth to pull away from your teeth. This causes pockets to form, making it challenging for your gums to retain your teeth firmly in position. As a result, they can become loose, and treatment will be required to retain them in place.

Trauma

A knock to the face can sometimes be enough to dislodge a tooth. In the event of an accident or injury to the face, come and see us as soon as you can, as it may be possible to save your loose tooth from needing to be extracted.

Tooth Grinding

Chronic tooth grinding and clenching can damage the ligaments connecting your teeth to the jawbone. The good news is that even if ligaments beneath the teeth are compromised, these can be restored, though time is of the essence. The earlier you notice a loose tooth and seek treatment, the more chance your dentist has of fortifying the ligaments.

What if I have to have the tooth extracted?

If the tooth requires extraction, this will benefit your oral health in the long term. As the leading implant clinic in the North East, you can receive outstanding quality treatment should you wish to have an implant placed to address the new gap in your teeth. Dental implants are exceptional at emulating the function of a real tooth root and can be a permanent answer to tooth loss as long as they are well cared for.
