Gum Contouring

The tooth-to-gum ratio is a key aspect influencing the overall appearance of a smile. With aesthetic gum contouring, it’s possible to treat a smile where there is excessive gum tissue. Meanwhile, functional gum contouring can restore gum tissue that has pulled away from the gums and exposed too much of a tooth.

Gum contouring addresses having too much gum or not enough gum to protect your teeth. Whilst excess gum is not harmful to your oral health, it can leave you feeling reluctant to smile. In treating what is readily known as a ‘gummy smile’, the world will be able to see more of your beautiful smile.

Functional gum contouring is to address gum recession, which is when gums have retracted away from your teeth. This can be caused by overzealous brushing, periodontal disease or genetics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the advantage of functional gum contouring?

When gum recession occurs, the weaker part of a tooth that isn’t covered in your protective enamel coating becomes exposed. The tooth is then vulnerable to decay and gum disease. By redistributing gum tissue to cover the exposed areas, you will have a healthier mouth.

Is gum contouring aesthetically beneficial?

As receding gums also make teeth appear longer than they actually are, it can be beneficial in an aesthetic way too. We can also use gum contouring to address what is often described as a ‘gummy smile’. This is when there is a large proportion of gum tissue on show when you smile. Restoring the ideal gum-to-tooth ratio will give you a more natural-looking smile.

How does functional gum contouring work?

Functional gum contouring involves grafting gum tissue from elsewhere in your mouth. We will normally use tissue from the roof of your mouth. This is removed under local anaesthetic and administered to the area where the recession has occurred.

How does aesthetic gum contouring work?

Using a special probe, we will gently remove the excess gum that sits over the top of the enamel. This can normally be performed in a single visit.

I’m a little nervous – can you help?

If you’re apprehensive about treatment, we can offer IV sedation to help you relax. It’s worth mentioning that gum contouring is a routine procedure, and our dentists are exceptional at making sure you’re completely comfortable throughout.

How many appointments does gum contouring require?

Gum contouring generally takes just one visit to complete. It’s a really convenient treatment to have that won’t take hours of time out of your schedule.

Can I have IV sedation during my gum contouring treatment?

We can offer IV sedation for virtually all our treatments, including gum contouring. It’s incredibly beneficial, especially if you need a bit of help relaxing when you visit the dentist. Intravenous (IV) sedation is a conscious type of sedation that will block your ability to experience anxiety and pain. We can’t recommend it enough if you have had a bad experience with a dentist in the past or if you would simply like to remember as little of the procedure as possible. As it produces amnesic effects, this is a completely normal side effect.

Do you offer finance for dental treatment?

Yes, we offer interest-free and interest-bearing finance so that high-quality dental care is accessible to all our patients.

I’m embarrassed about coming in – can you help?

We understand that coming in to seek implant-based treatments is a huge life event. Our clinicians are compassionate people who encounter many patients who feel self-conscious about the condition of their mouths. We understand how debilitating lost teeth can be, particularly on your confidence levels and your everyday happiness. We are very happy to book you in for a practice tour or an appointment with our treatment coordinator in a non-clinical setting before your consultation.
