Routine Hygiene

Your gum health is just as important as the health of your teeth. By attending regular visits to the hygienist, there’s no reason why you can’t look forward to good oral hygiene for many years to come.

The health of your gums is extremely important to us since it’s your gums that house your teeth. During your hygienist appointments, we will make sure we remove the plaque that’s settled along your gum line using gentle techniques and specially designed tools. In doing so, this will protect your gums from gum disease and its associated symptoms.

Our hygienists here at Denmark Street are also advocators for teaching patients how to work smarter rather than harder when it comes to their at-home oral hygiene routine. It might be that you need a hand developing more efficient brushing and flossing techniques, or maybe you’ve been reaching for foods you believed to be healthy for your gums and need guidance on those that are more tooth and gum-friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest threat to gum health?

Gum disease is the leading reason why adults prematurely lose their teeth. The great news is it’s totally preventable.

Can you help me avoid losing my teeth to gum disease?

Absolutely. Having plaque regularly removed from your gum line by a hygienist is a worthwhile undertaking that will protect your gums. Each time you come in to see us, we will be able to let you know when you next need to come in (this time scale will be determined by the present condition of your gums).

Are some people more at risk of developing gum disease than others?

There are certain individuals who may have a higher risk of developing gum disease, for example:

  • Pregnant women – hormonal changes can cause an increased susceptibility
  • Smokers
  • Genetics
  • Diabetes
  • Immune disorders
  • Stress
  • Poor oral hygiene

Do I need treatment for gum disease?

There are so many advantages of having gum disease treated, from reversing bad breath and unpleasant symptoms like inflammation and bleeding gums to protecting your natural teeth and your general health.

What is the Denmark Street Dental approach to gum health management?

Our state-of-the-art technology allows us to perform minimally invasive gum health treatment. We also have sophisticated diagnostic facilities, giving us a comprehensive picture of your gum health. This allows our dentists to accurately plan your treatment and achieve the most predictable outcome possible.

An educational approach is something we strongly believe in, as this helps to empower you to care for your gums day-to-day. We will always make sure we explain how you can make improvements to your oral hygiene and diet in a way that resonates and that you understand (we don’t do jargon!).

Do I need to attend the hygienist if I have no symptoms of gum disease?

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure”.

This quote emphatically applies to your gums, which will thank you for remaining problem-free as long as you attend preventive, routine hygienist appointments.

How will my teeth feel after a hygienist cleaning?

After a routine cleaning, you’ll find your teeth feel smooth, and your breath is fresher, as any stubborn plaque deposits will have been removed.

Do you offer finance for dental treatment?

Yes, we offer interest-free and interest-bearing finance so that high-quality dental care is accessible to all our patients.

I’m embarrassed about coming in – can you help?

We understand that coming in to seek implant-based treatments is a huge life event. Our clinicians are compassionate people who encounter many patients who feel self-conscious about the condition of their mouths. We understand how debilitating lost teeth can be, particularly on your confidence levels and your everyday happiness. We are very happy to book you in for a practice tour or an appointment with our treatment coordinator in a non-clinical setting before your consultation.

Who performs my treatment?

Multiple members of the Denmark Street Dental clinical team will be involved in the planning and treating your dental care. This includes dentists, dental nurses, dental technicians and sedation dentists, who work seamlessly together to deliver predictable results.

Can you offer sedation?

We do. Sedation is invaluable for helping extremely anxious patients relax during their treatment.
